MOTHERS DAY - REMEMBERING LEE LEE |
|
My grandma Lee Lee is responsible for my love of stitching, and she’s the reason I use stitching in my jewelry. Always with a pair of knitting needles in her hands, Lee Lee represents the best parts of all women. Not just as a mother or grandmother, but as a role model and teacher. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I think of Lee Lee and her influence on my work today.
As a young girl, I remember she’d visit nearly every weekend, and I’d get to work on a project, or she’d be teaching me how to knit and sew. She would also knit sweaters for us kids, and we’d get to pick our patterns and colors. I can still feel the anticipation and excitement as I watched Lee Lee’s quick hands and waited for my finished sweater.

It’s hard to pinpoint just one of Lee Lee’s pieces that influenced my jewelry the most. This vintage-inspired green jacket directly correlates to my jewelry, which is about stitching and lines.
Lee Lee could do amazing things with yarn and knitting needles. One of my favorites is this fisherman’s sweater, with the balls, cables, and different patterns. Her hands were magical to me.

Ironically, I didn’t know my mom could knit until she saw me knitting and offered a faster technique. She’d absorbed Lee Lee’s boundless knowledge and knitted this blue and white sweater while in high school.
I’ll never tire of looking at the patterns and cables in this sweater made for my mom. Lee Lee was patient in her teaching, never rushing or leaving out details. Time spent together felt nurturing and loving.

This embroidered baby dress for my sister had a direct influence on my jewelry style. The process of hand stitching goes far beyond technique. It’s a memory of Lee Lee, captured in fabric, stitching, and love.

For me, Mother’s Day is about all women and the innate strength that seems to be the common thread that ties us all together. Whether you’re honoring your mom, grandma, sister, or best friend, our connections as women, and our sisterhood, should be celebrated every day!
Did you have a role model like the one I had with Lee Lee? I’d love to hear about it! Hit reply to this email and tell me more.
